" I wanted to refine my painting technique and to achieve this I felt I would need a smoother surface to work on, than I had previously been using; so I began creating my own wood panels. I began with a bare wood panel, onto which I applied between 6 to 8 layers of gesso primer, and then sanded it down between each coat. When I began 'Dreams Are Made Of This' I quickly learnt that due to the smoothness of the wood, applied paint simply slid off the wooden surface. Consequently I applied more layers of paint and learnt a lot that I have carried over to new works. Another major change you will notice with this painting is the direction of the light source as the sun is now shining from the front which gives the style a whole new look.

Nearly every square inch of this painting has so many small touches that just weren't there on earlier works. As with all my paintings, I have no colour sketch to work to, it just all happens once, this painting simply became a real feast of colour theory. I start the painting and that gives me the freedom to experiment and it's helped me to keep improving with each new work."

"In 'Daydreaming' I experiment with using the light source to lighten a smaller area of the image than I previously would have done. Prior to starting this painting I had been researching more painting techniques and noticed some of the “old masters” used this concept of lightening a small important area of the painting to draw your attention to it. Once again, I've also experimented with this piece, with the light source coming from the front."

"‘Moonlight Shadows’ is one of my most experimental paintings. It was my first experimentation with under painting using a grisaille. This is a process in which the under painting is predominantly painted in black and white. The tones I used were black, white and raw umber which gives the under painting a slight brown tint, so that it isn't purely black and white. The under painting is brought up to a finished state so that it is a painting almost in its own right, albeit without any colour to speak of.

This painting is the first of a short series of three paintings to feature thatched cottages rather than my usual simple box house design. I was also able to explore a new colour theory as this painting is depicting a night time scene. The moon is casting a low cool colour/light, therefore to compliment this coolness I glazed some burnt sienna into the shadows emphasising a red/brown tint. This is a complete reverse of colour theory in comparison to my daytime scenes, where the light source is considered to be warm and the shadows are considered to be cool."

" For this painting I wanted the focal point to be the fork in the road with the little island and road sign. For me this painting is simply based on the notion that in life you follow a path and along the way you have the option to take different routes. I have a lot of fond memories for this painting. It's the first painting to feature the slightly sunken road, all the paintings leading up to this one had the road just painted flat with no depth. I also used a lot more opaque purples/magentas applied over the greens which was one of my earliest experiments with colour theory. I never produce a colour rough or colour sketch before I paint so a lot of things just happen on the canvas, some are planned and some are accidents that turn out well but all that new knowledge gets built on with each subsequent painting."

"I painted this not long after Valentines Day so I guess I was inspired to paint something with that particular day of the year in mind. For a while I'd been toying with the idea of manipulating the clouds and landscape into a subtle heart shape and this painting provided the perfect opportunity. The two clouds and farthest hill come together and form a simple heart shape with encompass the house. The simple setting and warm colour palette conjures up a feeling of warmth, love and romance."

"This was painted straight after 'Lazy Days' and I wanted to do another painting using techniques that I had experimented with in the sky on that painting. I love Lavender as a plant and a couple of local Lavender farms gave me the initial inspiration for this painting where the Lavender is planted in long rows and looks and smells gorgeous when in flower. This was my first long panoramic landscape painting and the wide views of the long rows of Lavender were perfect for this style of canvas. I painted the Lavender in a very stylized way to match the overall style of my work and I really like the final outcome although before I started the painting I was worried that it may not work. I can usually visualize very clearly how a finished painting will look before I've even started it. For that reason I never even do a rough colour sketch for any of my paintings, they just start with a very simple pencil sketch. I don't think about the colours until I literally pick up my paintbrushes."

"In this painting I've tried to encompass many of my favourite things about the local Dorset landscape. It's the end of a hazy warm summer's day in a typical narrow country lane that has cottages overlooking the far reaching views. I'd love to own a simple dwelling like this backing onto my own field; I'd plant up the garden with wild flowers and the whole family could enjoy all the wonderful wildlife that came to visit. When I get a day off this is typical of how I spend my day, walking through the countryside with my family and becoming inspired with new ideas."
