Comment:
It gives me an enormous amount of pleasure to see someone filled with joy or sadness when they look at one of my paintings; as they stare with familiar, loving eyes, seeing within the canvas remnants of someone they may have known extremely well.
Yet there are times in an artist's career when we create a painting that means so much personally, and 'My Family And Other Animals' is one such piece.
When I look at this piece, I see myself pulling at my mothers arm as if I were yearning to leave and see what the big wide world had in store for me. I see the awkward way my mum used to walk due to the arthritis in her legs. I see my Dad doing his duty, keeping us together sheltering us under his big 'brolly'. I see the “wee dug” that was as far away from me as he could possibly get, and I remember the scar he left on my left eyelid with his teeth, as a keepsake for me to remember him always.
I hope you see something that means as much to you in this scene.
If you're wondering where the title comes from it's from the book by the naturalist Gerald Durrell.
