I have been painting for as long as I can remember. I lived on the outskirts of London which meant I benefited from being within easy reach of London Galleries and open countryside, both of which were a source of immense inspiration to me. As an only child I had the freedom to immerse myself in my work, I also received a great deal of encouragement... (read on)
Commercial fine artist Caroline Shotton is one of the highest selling fine artists in the UK, reaching her peak of popularity upon releasing The Moosters: a collection of six paintings which used cows to parody classic fine art paintings. This consisted of Leonardo Da Vinci's 'Mona Lisa', Edvard Munch's 'The Scream', Salvador Dalí's 'The Persistence of Memory', Gustav's Klimt's 'The Kiss', Johannes Vermeer's 'Girl with a Pearl Earring', and Frans Hals' 'Laughing Cavalier'.
Caroline Shotton pays homage to who she considers inspiring artists by bringing a humorous, modern-day element to the composition of their most famous paintings with the introduction of cows. These animals, which she considers intelligent, playful and mischievous, were chosen due to Caroline's personal fascination with them; having owned cows herself. They replace the central heads, faces and objects of the original paintings and Caroline usually adopts a pun or establishes a 'play on words' when naming the pieces; with 'The Persistence of Memory' becoming 'the Persistence of Moomery'.
Her collection of paintings, which has now expanded to include original artworks featuring her own initial concepts and ideas, are best-sellers throughout the UK and US. Her use of multicolours and cows has resulted in her works becoming instantly-recognisable.
Caroline Shotton art is produced using a host of different techniques, all designed to create the high quality finish these pieces are so renowned for. Many layers of paint, paper and varnish are used to draw attention to particular areas of the painting, whilst primer and tissue paper contribute to the texture of the piece.
The composition of the piece is then sketched out and the larger areas of vibrant colour are blocked-in. It is this use of colour which has made Caroline Shotton prints so popular amongst adults and children alike.
When the background design and main image of Caroline Shotton prints is complete, a layer of varnish and paint is applied to combine the painting's main features. Finally, the fine details which have made Caroline Shotton art so renowned are attended to and the cows' personalities are conveyed using particular brushstrokes on their eyes.
